Bordering on the water, the City of Ningbo has been developed.
The name of the city means 'calm wave', which shows the close relationship between the city and the water.

Some 300 art performances are held every year in Ningbo. There are 22 national culture protection units, and 67 museums, memorial halls and exhibition halls. The Sea Silk Road of Ningbo and Shanglinhu Porcelain Kiln Remains of Yue are on the national preparative list and waiting to apply for the world cultural heritage status.

Ningbo is an important industrial base in Zhejiang Province, and includes the 13th largest container port in the world. The city has formed an industrial system, which is mainly composed of traditional mainstays, such as textile, garments, and machinery, large-scale harbor-based industries represented by petrochemicals, iron & steel, power generation and paper-making etc, and new hi-tech industry including integration of electronic information and mechanical & electrical, biomedicine, etc.
